Back Home...

I (dan) have been thinking that it might be difficult to understand who wrote what you are reading sometimes because we (kate and dan) have not been signing our posts regularly. So i (dan) think we (kate and dan) are going to start doing that more often.

Anyway, since we got back to houghton I've been eating fucking fast food. egh...

I'm not going to bother with posting about the taco bell, arby's, and mtu campus food that has been torturing my bowels for that last few days. But last night i did come up with a couple cool things!

Kate, Erin and I made ice Cream Sundaes!! It was pretty great.

We used:
Slow Churned Cookies and Cream ice cream
Redi-Whip
Hershey's Hot Fudge
Maraschino Cherries

pretty simple.

I also made a new drink recipe. It doesn't quite compare to the greatness of Milkskey (a drink whose explanation will require it's own entire post), but it's pretty good.
It Contains:
1/3 Mountain Dew
1/3 Blueberry Schnapps
1/3 Red Wine

I don't know what to call it yet, but it looks cool because all of the different colors separate if you let it sit for a minute.

OH! IT'S ST. PATRICK'S DAY!
Kate and Erin are preparing a nice traditional meal and I'm going to drink all of the guiness Kate bought. Should be fun, expect updates.

GNOCCHI

HOLY SHIT I LOVE GNOCCHI.

We have a show in Iron River tonight at the lovely HeBrews Coffee and Music. Instead of paying us with dollars, they pay us with delicious food. Tonight's special was chicken and gnocchi soup and home made bread and butter. omgomgomg. SO GOOD. Dan, Erin, and I have been flipping out about it all evening. I think we all had at least 2 cups. It seemed to consist of chicken, leeks possibly?, gnocchi, celery, carrots, and a milky, light creamy base with a subtle spice. the bread was perfectly crusty on the outside and soft in the middle. Erin and I are determined to recreate it. We'll post the recipe here when we do.

Pizza di Roma- Madison, WI
Yesterday, we spend the day in Madison, WI exploring and shopping. We stopped at Pizza di Roma to grab some lunch. Dan and Troy ordered way way too much pizza. Pizza 1 was 18 inches of pure fucking heaven. It was the Pizza di Roma special with sun-dried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, olives, scallions and fresh goat cheese. Pizza 2 was a spinach and feta white pizza at a more reasonable 14 inches but just as delicious. Personally, I prefered the spinach pizza. Both were tasty, well balanced, not the least bit greasy, and easy enough to eat once you figured out your folding method. My main criticism lies with the crust. It was a little too hard and the flavor left something to be desired.

Erin and I grabbed some baclava on the way out. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but still tasty and a nice end to the lunch experience.

Some things to look forward to in the upcoming days, Erin and I are going to make some tasty St. Patrick's Day treat for Bridge House! Erin knows how to make corned beef and cabbage and I'm really excited to learn how. We're thinking about adding some kind of potatoe dish and I might make my blueberry crumble for dessert. Should be tasty!

Ann Arbor to Madison

Anyone who has been to the towns of Ann Arbor, MI and Madison, WI would probably agree with me that these two towns are exactly the same. It felt like we drove in a giant 7 hours circle today. Luckily, i bought a new car yesterday after my old one broke so it was like a first date. it went pretty well, ill probably ask her out again.

anyway, we had breakfast at a neat diner called...

Northside Grill (ann arbor, MI)

We found this place because it was the closest breakfast place to us (according to google). I'm glad we found it. I had a burger, it was great. It was expensive (~$10), but i got it exactly how i wanted it, with bacon, janlepenios and guacamole. i should explain why i got a cheeseburger for breakfast: the first thing i noticed on the menu was OLD FASHIONED VANILLA COKE!!!! everyone knows you cant drink coke with breakfast so i got lunch (it was after noon anyway). Everyone who got breakfast loved it though. They have large pancakes, good breakfast sandwiches, and other classics. I highly recomend this diner.

Oh, i almost forgot about last night!

Bell's Pizza (ann arbor, MI)

After walking through the rain and drinking a couple beers i decided that i absolutely needed a mushroom and feta pizza. Our friend alex, who was nice enough to let us stay at his house, informed me that bell's is a solid pizza joint that would deliver after midnight. We got my mushroom and feta pie, and a pepperoni pizza. both were great. awesome crust, quality toppings. the downside is the price. we payed like $30 for 2 pizzas. i used up all the cash i had, but it felt worth it at the time.

Then we drove to madison to see Ru, and got stuck in chicago traffic. It was ok though because it was "rush" hour and we listened to all of 2112. we drove straight to...

Ginza of Tokyo (madison, WI)

Japanease steak house where they have the chef make giant flames whilke you sit around the stove thing. I loved it. I coulnt finish my meal because joe bought me too many japanease beers to pay me back for the pizza last night. i havn't been to many of these places but this one had some "best japanease resataurant" plaque in it, so im sure it is good comparatively. i really liked it. theres 2 of this franchise in town, if you're around you should check it out. the sushi was pretty good too.

We have shows for the next 3 days, so i dont know if we'll have a chance to eat anything cool, but I'll keep the updates flowing. i feel myself getting into the swing of this blogging deal...

Oh hello.

So Dan has already pretty much summed up our food experience this far, but I'll add a couple things.

First, I'll add the recipe for the Biscuits and Gravy I made today

Kate's Super Easy Biscuits and White Sausage Breakfast Gravy
- 1 pound ground sausage (or sausage links broken up)
- 4 tbsp white flour
- 4ish cups of milk
- Black pepper, cayenne pepper, and salt, to taste.

1) Brown sausage
2) Slowly sprinkle in flour, stirring into the sausage so that no lumps form
3) Pour in milk. I didn't measure the amount I put in, but between 3 and 4 cups should do it.
4) Stir until gravy begins to thicken. This may take 5-10 minutes, but don't worry! It will happen. It's temping to jump the gun and add more flour, but just wait it out. If you add more flour too soon, when it finally comes together, you'll have a lumpy mess instead of gravy.
5) Add your cracked black pepper and salt to taste. I add a bit of cayenne too, for a little extra spice.
6) Pour over hot, split biscuits and enjoy!

Serves 4-8, depending on biscuit size.

Second, we just bought a shit ton of beer. Here's a quick breakdown and short review. I'm no beer expert, but this is my layman's opinion. Watch me get more drunk as this goes on.

Dragon's Milk- New Holland Brewing Co.
I bought this for Dan because it's called FUCKING DRAGONS MILK and generally sounds metal as shit. It's a high gravity brew at 8.3%. Dark, carmely with a little hint of chocolate. It tastes a lot like the home brew I just made (see more later about that) but with a much stronger hops presence, less sweet, and way more balls, overall. (6/10)

Red Jacket Amber- Keweenaw Brewing Co.
I was so excited that a store down here sold KBC that I spent $10 for a 6 pack. This is the brew I get at the KBC bar at home. A little hoppy and easy to drink, I like this beer because it has plenty of flavor but offers drinkability (fuck you bud light) (7.5/10)

Olde Number 22- Arbor Brewing Co.
I bought this because the box said the company was Ypsi based and that the beer was dark but mellow (right up my alley). I'm not getting the mellow, easy to drink thing they're trying to sell. Tastes like a regular dark beer to me, nothing really special. Has the bitter hoppiness without the complexity of carmel, chocolate, or coffee undertones I look for in a dark beer. Not bad, though. Just not stand out. (6/10)

Indian Brown Ale- Dogfish Head
This is Troy's beer for tonight. I decided I liked this from the first sip. A rich and flavorful brown ale with just the right amounts of hops. Yummy, but not something I would spend the whole night drinking. Something I would have with dinner. (8/10)

Note on the rating scale:
Basically, 6-10 means I would purposely buy this beer. 3-5 is beer I would buy based on cost or availability and wouldn't mind drinking. 1-2 is something I wouldn't drink if you gave it to me. Think Old Style. Also, this is all relative to my personal view of tasty beers.

so far...

On this trip we've had a few meals. here's a quick run-down:

Burger King (l'anse, MI)

yep, we had ome BK. i had a whopper or some shit.

Theio's (lansing, MI)

Oh man, feta cheese on every item on the menu. this place is a afterbarclose style diner that shares a parking lot with the bar we we're playing at friday night. Big portions, pretty good food, fair prices. I ordered chili-cheese french fries and a gyro. the fries had some pretty authentic chili and melted cheese, way more than i could eat. the gyro was alright, it hit the spot, buti forgot to order it without onions. i think i payed like $14 or something, and i ended up giving my friend dave what i couldn't finish so it pretty much fed 2.

Miyako (auburn hills, MI)

SUSHI. i've been to this restaurant a couple times before. It's pretty good sush. Our friends troy and alisha we're with us and they don't really like sushi, but i think they still had fun. now i'll share with you some candid feelings i have about sushi. It's a tasty treat that i like to eat ONCE when i go out of town because it's expensive and if you eat it too much it's not a special occasion anymore. that being said, this place is as good as any other place i've had sushi.

Kate's mom's house (pontiac, MI)

home-cooked breakfast every morning. this is my shit. waflles, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, and i just ate some BNG (biscuits and gravy). I give 9/10 meals topped with gravy a 10/10.

Sagebrush Cantina (lake orion, MI)

I ate a burrito the size of a NFL football, didn't finish it, and felt 100lb heavier until i fell asleep. it was incredible. like miyako, i've been to this restaurant before and it was a proirity to stop here again. maybe its not productive to get into eating at the the same places every time i'm in town when im trying to start a food blog, but i dont care, that burrito is fucking huge. and its like $8. A+++++ would eat again.

hopefully this week i can eat more oversized food and gyros. then i will be happy.

HELLO

Hi, This is Dan. We just started a BLOG ABOUT FOOD WE EAT! By "we" i mean myself and Kate, and maybe anyone else who happens to be out enjoying food with us. You see, Kate and I play folk music in a band called "This Is Deer Country". We live in the upper peninsula of Michigan and when we play shows on the road we like to eat at cool new restaurants, so we decided to share our thoughts on everything in a blog.

Also, maybe we'll throw some of our recipes that we think of on here and you can make somrthing for yourself.

Right now we are in Pontiac, Michigan. We've had some good food so far this trip so i guess we have some catching up to do...
